Ducati motorcycles to be available in India at Rs 20 lakh and above


Ducati builds some of the most beautiful bikes in the world, but at Rs 20 lakh and above, is there a significant market in India for these bikes?

Italian sportsbike manufacturer, Ducati is now setting up shop in India. Ducati Motor Holding will be operating in India via Precision Motor India Pvt Ltd, which will be the sole importer of Ducati motorcycles in the country.

‘We will be launching four different models in multiple variants. These bikes will be available starting at Rs 20 lakh to Rs 50 lakh in the Indian market,’ said Ashish Chordia, CEO, Precision Motor. He added that his company would import fifty Ducati bikes from Italy this year, increasing the number next year depending on demand.

'We strongly believe the fast growing Indian market is of a strategic importance to Ducati and we will do our best to consolidate our presence and capitalise on the huge opportunity this country has to offer,' said Ducati CEO Gabriele Del Torchio. The Italian company is expected to spend up to US$4 million towards setting up its dealer network in India. The first two showrooms will be opened in Delhi and Mumbai, with other major cities to follow in 2009.

Ducati manufactures high-performance sportsbikes and superbikes which are famous for their V-twin engines. The Italian company has been extremely successful in World Superbikes and MotoGP, the two top professional motorcycle roadracing series in the world.

In India, 114% import duties will be levied on Ducati bikes, making them extremely expensive by world standards. From Rs 21.75 lakh for the Ducati 848 to Rs 48 lakh for the Ducati 1098R, these bikes will only be for the super-rich.

In the recent past, Pune-based Kinetic had imported some units of the Hyosung GT250, a Korean-built sportsbike that sold for Rs 1.80 lakh. And Yamaha is also selling the R1 superbike and MT01 musclebike, both of which are priced upwards of Rs 12 lakh, in the Indian market.

Other Japanese bike makers as well as Bajaj-KTM are also expected to bring in bigger, sportier bikes to India this year, while Tata is said to be considering buying a stake in MV Agusta, another Italian company that makes some of the best superbikes in the world.

Namun pemilik Scorpio yang berumur lebih dari tiga tahun kerap mengeluhkan performa karbu jadi menurun. “Itu lantaran karet vakum sudah mulai keras. Tentu ngaruh terhadap isapan bensin yang kurang maksimal. Akhirnya tarikan kurang responsip,” jelas Ari Supriyono, punggawa bengkel Protechnics.

Tinggal ganti karet vakum, masalah bakal selesai. Namun banyak yang mengeluh harga karet vakum yang mencapai Rp 400 ribu. “Ada yang sekalian ganti karburator model skep, tarikan lebih oke dan harga beda tipis,” ujar Rigno, pemilik Scorpio dari klub DPR Otomotif Community.2624hal13_karbuscorpio_boyo2.jpg

Ada berbagai pilihan karbu skep yang banyak dijual toko variasi. Paling banyak dipakai Scorpio yaitu Keihin. Tersedia tiga model atau varian yang ditawarkan, yaitu PE, PWL dan PWK. “Ketiganya berventuri 28 mm. Secara kasat mata modelnya mirip. Namun buat pemasangan dan seting punya perlakuan berbeda,” tambah Ari dari Jl. Pahlawan, No. 1, Rempoa, Ciputat, Tangerang.

Mari bahas satu per satu. Mulai dari Keihin PE, harga Rp 500 ribu-Rp 600 ribuan, paling banyak diminati pemilik Scorpio. Karbu PE Punya karakter tarikan atas oke. Namun putaran bawah agak sulit didapat. “Bila ingin tarikan bawah dapat, kompresi harus dibikin lebih padat,” terang mekanik berambut ikal ini lagi.

2625hal13_karbuscorpio_boyo3.jpgUntuk seting karbu ini, paling pas pakai spuyer ukuran 115 buat main -jet sedang 42 buat pilot-jet. “Buat atur putaran anginnya satu seperempat putaran balik setelah diset mentok,” lanjut Ari yang menjelaskan bila tipe PE jarum skepnya sudah fix tidak bisa disetel.

Pilihan kedua, adalah Keihin PWL. Banderol yang dipasang mulai Rp 700 ribu–800 ribuan. Keunggulan dari tipe PWL memiliki jarum skep yang bisa distel. “Untuk seting jadi lebih mudah. Jadi, sebelum ganti spuyer bisa disetel dari jarum skepnya dulu,” jelasnya.

Karakter PWL buka-bukaan gas lebih oke buat jarak pendek. Karakter ini cocok buat trek dalam kota dan ubahan Scorpio trail. “Sedang untuk putaran atasnya masih bagus tipe PE,” ujar Ari yang kasih bocoran seting spuyer untuk main-jet ukuran 120 sedangkan pilot-jet 48, dengan putaran angin lebih kurang 360 derajat alias satu putaran.

Terakhir, Keihin PWK, tipe ini paling spesial dari dua model di atas. Lantaran untuk tarikan bawah dan atas seting karbu mudah didapat. Namun harga juga spesial, Rp 2,2 jutaan. Tipe ini punya skep model oval. Tapi untuk main-jetnya tidak sama, dimensi lebih panjang dari dua tipe sebelumnya di atas. “Cocoknya pakai main-jet yang biasa diaplikasi karbu Keihin motor SE,” cerocos Ari.

Untuk urusan seting spuyer di Scorpio, memang jauh lebih mudah. Main-jet ukuran 120 sedang pilot-jet 48. Setelan angin cukup digeser 1,5 putaran balik setelah diputar mentok. Getooo, lhoooo...!
